Much has been said in the last weekend about Pelé's 70th birthday, but not not a lot of people know that tomorrow is an another football genius birthday: Don Diego Armando Maradona is turning 50.
It's possible that someone will ask me: Why writing about Maradona and not Pelé's birthday? I do not intend to start another debate of who was the better. I think that's useless. My choice has is based in two main reasons: 1- I saw Maradona playing but I didn't see Pelé; 2- The truth is that, there is no doubt in my mind that a character, "El Pibe" is much more interesting than the "Athlete of the Century"
I always say that if someday someone, who doesn't know Maradona's story, watch a movie about his life, would not be really sure if he is a good or a bad guy until the last scene. Diego is one of those characters who never goes unnoticed. It's impossible to be indifferent to him. He always aroused passions with the same ease that arouses hatred. Drug addicted, arrogant, delinquent, cheater, self-destructive... The controversy and talent were always together as key drivers of his life. Diego is not a role model as a man, as a father, as an athlete, but even though he has a huge legion of fans, not only in Argentina but all around the world. The passion that this fans has no precedent in football history. And there is a simple explanation for that behavior: Maradona is human...
Although he's called D10S (God) in Argentina, Diego probably is the most human between all the football gods. Everything he done in his life, good or bad, was done with tremendous intensity. People like that, made them feel closer to their idol. Each time he fought for a loose ball, each time he celebrated his goals with bulging neck veins, each fight, each time he went to rehab, he always seem so human. Maradona is authentic, real, passional... His life could easily be a tango song. Nothing else could be more dramatic, more intense, more Argentinean, more Maradona...
